second cousin once removed?

what does that mean?  this chart helps clarify

A second cousin means he/she is the child of your mother's or father's first cousin.  In other words, you have the same great grand parent.

A second cousin once removed means they are the child of your second cousin.

wait, actually I see another second cousin once removed on the chart.

It could be the child of your grandparents first cousin.

OK, now it's even more confusing since there are actually two definitions.

Let's make it simpler and define a first cousin once removed.

Two people for whom a first cousin relationship is one generation removed.
The child of one's first cousin; also the first cousin of one's parent.

So what is the relationship between the two definitions of first cousin once removed?

For one thing, they are two generations apart (with you in the middle).  Looking at the chart, the grandparent of the first cousin once removed is the great great grandparent of the other first cousin once removed.

Yeah, that's clear now...
